Chapter 2 · Part 3
His smile faded, but there was something resolute in his eyes. “Maybe that’s why you won’t give me a shot. I don’t do things that make you uncomfortable. Maybe I need to push a little.”
“Sebastian—” I started, but he was already calling the waiter over, his eyes fixed on me with that stubborn glint I knew too well.
“What do you want?” he asked as the waiter approached.
I scanned the menu again. What was the cheapest thing I could order? “I’ll have oysters,” I said.
“I’ll have oysters too,” Sebastian added with a grin.
Matter settled.
Things flowed smoothly, surprisingly. The music was soft, the oysters unreal, and time slipped away faster than I expected.
Then something shifted. The room grew cold. The music stopped. People began leaving as if summoned by some invisible signal.
“Something crazy is going on,” Sebastian muttered.
“Nobody’s here,” I said.
We were halfway to the exit when a woman dressed in black rushed toward us. “Miss Hazel, my boss would like to chat with you.”
How the hell did she know my name?
“I’ll have to decline,” I said sharply.
“Miss—”
“Because you’ll be chatting with me, Hazel.”
I froze. That voice.
Mr. Baker stepped into view, power radiating from every inch of him.
“I already told you my answer,” I said.
“I know,” he replied smoothly. “I thought I’d try again.”
“If a woman says no, you should respect it,” Sebastian cut in.
Mr. Baker didn’t even look at him. “Is he your boyfriend?”
“None of your business,” I snapped.
“Does he know?” Mr. Baker pressed.
Panic clawed at my chest.
“Sebastian, I should talk to him,” I said quietly.
“I’ll be outside,” he muttered before storming out.
“I’ll drop her off,” Mr. Baker added.
“There’s no fucking way,” Sebastian snapped.
The door slammed. Silence followed.
“What do you want?” I demanded.
Mr. Baker smiled. “For that, Hazel, we need to sit down and talk properly.”
