Hazel POV
Eight years later.
Gabriella Lee Bailey was the same version of me—stubborn and persuasive to a fault. With her head thrown to the side and her arms crossed in defiance, I knew I had already lost the battle.
“What do you want?” I asked, playing dumb even though I already knew.
“I want you to go on a date with Uncle Bastian.”
Kids started asking questions about missing parents at this age. I saw it in Gabby, the way she longed for a complete family.
“How do you know Uncle Bastian likes me?” I teased.
She rolled her eyes. “Everyone knows. Betty said he was looking at you like you were a Disney princess.”
“And what if Mommy doesn’t like him?”
“That’s not true,” she said quickly. “I heard what you told Aunt Zara.”
My heart flipped. I thought she’d been outside playing.
Gabby filled every space in me. My love for her was cosmic—expanding, endless. She was my sun, my reason, my everything.
“So,” she asked softly, “are you going to go on the date?”
“We’ll see, sweetheart. We’ll see.”
The truth was, I had no intention of dating Sebastian. Not anymore. Not after everything.
“I want a yes or no answer.”
“Fine,” I sighed. “One date. Only one.”
She celebrated like she’d won gold.
“Did he put you up to this?” I asked.
She avoided my gaze. “Sebastian said he’d marry you.”
My phone rang. My work line.
Weekends were for Gabby and me. Always.
I declined the call. Then it rang again.
“You should answer,” Gabby said.
I stepped into my room and picked up.
“I need you here in twenty minutes,” Madame Rosalie snapped.
The urgency in her voice left me no choice.
