The Summer I Went Wild Chapter 5 Part 3

Chapter 5 · Part Three

The Summer I Went Wild

“This place is boring.”

Maddy announced, tossing a pillow onto the floor with a thud.

“I disagree with you,” I said.

We’d spent the last two hours playing silly games and lounging on the deck. The sunset was breathtaking—a blend of fiery orange and soft pink streaks fading into the darkening blue of the sky.

The ocean mirrored the colors, waves glinting gold as they slapped rhythmically against the shore, a soothing counterpoint to the lazy hum of the evening.

“Why?” Maddy stretched her arms wide, leaning back into her chair.

“I dunno. This is nice,” I said, gesturing toward the horizon.

“Whatever. This is boring to me.”

I threw my hands up in mock defeat and reached into my pocket for my lighter, lighting the cigarette between my fingers.

I wouldn’t usually smoke on a day like this—especially after passing the preliminary round of the competition—but Caleb was already puffing away, and somehow, it felt fitting to join him.

“What do you suggest we do?” Roger asked, snagging the lighter from my hand.

“How’s skinny-dipping for a start?” Maddy grinned.

“You’re one crazy chick,” Theo laughed.

He was sitting next to Charlotte, his arm draped casually over the back of her chair. They’d been flirting all day—small jokes, lingering looks, easy smiles.

“Why? You hate crazy chicks?”

“No, I was just saying,” Theo replied, glancing at her again.

“Who wants to join me?” Maddy asked.

“Me,” Roger said eagerly.

“I won’t miss out either,” Caleb added.

“Guess I don’t want to miss out,” I said.

My anticipation had less to do with swimming and more to do with whether Charlotte would join us.

“Would you be joining?” Theo asked Charlotte.

“I’m good here,” she said, shaking her head.

“That means I won’t be joining since—”

“No, no. You should if you want to.”

Charlotte remained firm.

“Let’s find something else,” Caleb suggested.

“Nah, I’ll just watch the sunset and keep reading,” she said, motioning to the book beside her.

“And leave you behind?” Maddy scoffed. “Not happening.”

“Never Have I Ever,” Maddy declared.

“I support her,” Theo said quickly.

“Same,” Caleb and I said together.

Thank God Charlotte turned down skinny-dipping.

“I really wanted to see Maddy’s tits,” Roger smirked.

Caleb threw a water bottle cap at him.

“Good thing I picked up this deck,” Maddy said, returning with cards and two bottles of whiskey.

She dropped back onto Roger’s lap like she’d never left.
