Obsession Chapter 3 Part 3

CHAPTER 3 · PART FOUR

Obsession

We knocked on the Richardsons’ front door, and to no one’s surprise, Beatrice opened it herself—not one of her maids, but Beatrice in all her self-important glory.

She wore a practiced smile, though curiosity flickered in her eyes. Word traveled fast, and I wouldn’t have been surprised if she already knew Grandma was ridiculously wealthy.

“Stella! Betty! Sara! What a surprise,” she said sweetly. “And who might this elegant lady be?”

Her gaze lingered on Grandma, her smile stretching wider like she’d just won the lottery.

“We thought we’d stop by,” I said politely. “May we come in?”

“Of course, of course,” she chirped, stepping aside.

The living room screamed money—white marble floors, gold-accented furniture, and an oversized chandelier desperate for attention.

A maid I didn’t recognize brought in an ornate tray. Beatrice’s prized Queen Elizabeth teacup sat on it.

“Please, help yourselves,” Beatrice said. “And introduce me to this lovely woman.”

“This is my grandmother,” I said, pride thick in my voice. “The richest woman in the world.”

Beatrice’s eyes widened. Greed lit her face instantly.

Grandma caught my eye and nodded slightly as I sipped the bitter wine.

“We came to thank those who’ve been there for our family,” I said.

“Oh, how thoughtful,” Beatrice gushed. “And how does she plan to help us?”

Grandma pulled out a sleek checkbook and wrote calmly.

Beatrice reached for it—

I snatched it and tore it into shreds.

“What the hell was that?” Beatrice screamed.

“You think I’d let my grandmother give you anything after what you did to my mom and me?” I snapped.

I stood and grabbed the wine, pouring it over her perfectly styled hair.

Red liquid soaked through her curls.

“Serves you right,” Grandma said calmly.

Betty laughed uncontrollably. Mom looked horrified.

“Get out of my house!” Beatrice screamed.

“Gladly,” I said.

We walked out together, laughter trailing behind us.

Nothing—not even Mom’s scowl—could dim my triumph.

Beatrice got what she deserved.

And nothing stood between me and America anymore.
